A Post Pyefleet Week Message From Our Chairman

14937692465_05f61ca5ba_kWell no sooner had the long awaited 2014 Pyefleet week started, than it was finished.  Perhaps not a classic thanks to the weather but memorable all the same for a variety of reasons.  After the shouts of “starboard” the “on the water discussions ” and dare I say a few “expletives” had disappeared with the wind we are left with the fantastic images of 22 BOD’s jostling for position around No 12 in the sunshine, then the glorious sight of spinakers on churning water racing down the Mersea shore.  Fantastic!
In the aftermath Malcolm remarked that the first three boats in the series had average ages on board of around 50 years, 22years and over 60 years respectively.  The BOD’s carried around 67 sailors during the week and probably more.  The oldest sailor I suggest was over 70 and the youngest I believe was 4.  Do we need any more evidence that the fleet is alive and well.
Whilst the sailing was very competative throughout the fleet the camraderie, support and generosity of the fleet members was clearly evident off the water too.  Who can forget the  to BOD Bavarian evening.  Perhaps some would like to but there is video evidence!!!  A huge thanks is due to Mark Wilby and his team for organising this excellent event.
On behalf of the BOD association I would like to thank Alice Davies and indeed the whole of Brightlingsea Sailing Club for a wonderful week.  The huge efforts of so many to produce a week of racing and entertainment was recognised I am sure by all who visited.  I feel that particular thanks should be extended to the race officers, catering team , bar staff, committee boat volunteers, safety boat crews and all others who gave so much of their time to make the week a great success.  Thank you one and all.  Not a classic week?  Perhaps it was!
Well done Brightlingsea Sailing Club

Mark Rounding Mayhem In The President’s Race

We will have a full report from Pyefleet Week for you shortly but in the meantime here is a great video clip from Tim Bees of the manic turning mark rounding during the final President’s Race which featured a very special appearance by a large motor cruiser driven by a man Steve Heppell aptly described as having less brain cells than propellers! 😉

BOD Monday Morning Racing Cancelled At Pyefleet Week

Sorry folks.  Bertha is on her way, but not fast enough to allow us to race the Monday morning race of Pyefleet Week.

The Race Officers have confirmed that they will aim to run the missed race on Wednesday morning and further information about this will be published shortly.

Good news – now we have all day to get our dirndls and lederhosen ready for tonight’s big BOD Bavarian Extravaganza which kicks off at 6.3opm at the club.

No Racing On Opening Day Of Pyefleet Week – But Extra Time To Find Your Lederhosen!

P1010985Bertha has got the better of us and there will be no racing on the opening day of Pyefleet Week for any classes.  Race Officers David Chivers (overseeing our half of the day) and Craig Bond (overseeing the “other” half) met at 08.30 this morning to review the situation.  Initially it looked as if it might be possible to run a short race this morning before the wind got up, but during the deliberations it started to build until they were regularly seeing gusts of Force 6.  Wisely the boys made the sad, but necessary, decision to host N over A and cancel all racing for today. Fingers crossed that the situation improves for tomorrow when the BODs are on the morning shift starting at 10.36.

Costume3The good news about the cancellation of today’s racing is that it gives everyone an extra day to sort out the German beer festival fancy dress ready for Monday night’s big BOD Bavarian Extravaganza.  Don’t forget that you can buy a German hat with your first pint for just £5 so look out those check shirts and leather shorts and come on down!

Welcome To The Fleet Chris & Gill Jordan!

IMG_2653David and Celia Charlton’s purchase of Sarah Louise means that they no longer need to borrow Blue Peter for Pyefleet Week, however, Adrian and Judith Gibbons have most generously offered her to Chris and Gill Jordan who will be racing her instead.

Chris and Gill will be well known to those of you who race regularly at the Sailing Club as they have raced various boats there for many years.  We are thrilled that they are joining the BOD Fleet for Pyefleet Week and look forward to welcoming them when they get back from the Laser 2000 Nationals on Saturday.

Their entry with Blue Peter confirms us at 24 boats for Pyefleet Week!  Can’t wait to get started now.
