Here is the first update from Alan Hicks on the start of construction of his beautiful new boat C54. As you will see from the photos below Rob White’s team have finished the laminating of the hull and the boat has been moved to Simon at Thorpe for the templating for the side and forward buoyancy tanks. Alan tells us that Malcolm kindly brought over the templates he made while fitting out White Spirit and there was much discussion about the best way to fit them with Rob making some very helpful contributions to the discussions.
The centreplate is currently being forged at East Coast Castings and should be completed in the next week or so. Much time has been spent by Alan thinking over fittings, etc, using copies of plans to make life easier later. The big things to finalise and order over the next two weeks are mast, spars and sails.
Clearly progress is very quick with the construction so everything looks good for a launch in spring 2014. We’ll bring you more updates soon and thanks to Alan for sharing the photos below and for keeping us update on progress.
The mould being prepared (the waterline is showing as the pink line)
The gelcoat goes on (we love the pale green colour!)
The glass layers going on
The boat goes to Simon who is making the patterns for the side and rear buoyancy tanks.
Is any one up for joining Mark White and the White Spirit team and Colin Willett and the Bidi crew for the BSC winter series? The weather is generally light ideal BOD weather and if you keep your boat in park & ride you might as well leave it there till christmas and take advantage of any good weather/winds.
Racing is every Sunday starting 27 October and finishing 22 December with the exception that there is the Christmas Cracker Pursuit Race on 15 December followed by the club Christmas Lunch. Start times are mornings between 11am and noon depending on the tide time. Full details at www.sailbrightlingsea.com

Thanks to Alex Button and Tim Bees we have some fantastic photos from Sunday’s Final Fling. Check out their galleries below.
Sadly it was so windy on Sunday that only Mark White and the White Spirit crew actually battled around the course. And battled was the right phrase with big gusts up towards 30 knots giving them some fairly hairy moments. Well done to Ruff for also heading out and giving it a look, but we don’t blame you for coming straight back in as it was definitely a breezy old day and a low tide.
The good news is that this coming weekend we have the Final Fling Race starting from Batemans followed by Sunday lunch at the Colne Yacht Club on Sunday 6 October. Right now the forecast is for a light north easterly and with the start time of 10.30 and high tide at 13.39 it should be a lovely sail! Please don’t forget to book in if you wish to join the fleet for lunch – call 01205 302594.
Earlier today we posted an update about this Sunday’s Osborne Cup 2 (29 Sept) which is published in the BOD programme as being at 14.10 from BSC. In fact the BSC are running morning racing on Sunday and the correct start time is going to be a little after 11.00am. We will be added to the BSC start sequence so please check at the club for an exact start time. Apologise for confusion.
The Met Office currently informs us that Sunday will be sunny and dry with a few broken clouds and an easterly breeze of around 15-20 knots (possibly some bigger gusts later on). The Osborne Cup starts at a little after 11.00 (not 14.10 as originally stated in this article) from the BSC line and once again we should have a good turnout so we’re looking forward to seeing as many of you there as possible.

Exciting news! Rob White confirms that construction has now begun on C54 which is to be Alan Hicks’ new boat. Alan confirms that they are very much hoping to have the boat completed in time for the start of Thursday night sailing next year and he has kindly agreed to send us through periodic photos and updates so we can keep up with how construction is going. Stand by for more news soon.
