It transpires that our first edition of this story had an error in the results for race three. Results and story both now corrected.
Nick Readings made the popular decision to run a Mini Series for the R Stone Challis with a course set from off Mersea shore to Gazelet for two races and followed by a final race to Big Buoy following a wind shift. Everyone had a very good afternoon’s racing and as can be seen from the results nothing was set in stone as some helm/crew had mixed fortunes in the afternoon.
Malcolm Goodwin and his team in Jean were star performers with a set of straight wins, but behind them the battles for second and third place were epic with Bidi, Grethe, Gelasma and White Spirit all vying for a podium place. It came down to the final race when Dan Willett in Bidi snatched a second place and second overall with ten points and Mark White’s White Spirit took third in the race and third overall on 11 points. On the line Mike Hempstead’s Gelasma just pipped Grethe, being sailed in Fi’s absence by Geoff Gritton and his new C56 crew, for fourth place, but it wasn’t quite enough to put him ahead overall so Grethe was fourth on 12 points and Gelasma fifth on 13 points. Mark Wilby and Phil Holding’s The Mike was just two points further back in sixth with the Trevor Stone’s Ruff seventh and Bob Richardson’s Panic eighth.
Thanks as always to Nick and Pam Readings and Marilyn Hempstead for their sterling work in the committee/safety boat.
There are just two more official BOD events to go this season. The second of the Osbourne Cup events from BSC on Sunday 4 October starting at 14.00 (check BSC for your exact start time) and then the one and only Final Fling on Sunday 11 October from CYC starting at 11.00 (note slightly revised start time) and followed by the Final Fling Lunch (last few lunch tickets remaining can be booked at the CYC bar).

Hi Mark
Thanks for highlighting this error. I spoke with Geoff Gritton and he agrees you finished in third place. There is a bit of confusion about the finish order for Gelasma, Grethe and The Mike though as Geoff has a different order to the one you suggest above – I gather all three boats finished very close together. I have a call out to Mike Hempstead and have emailed the race officers for their help to a) get your results sorted out and b) get clarity on the other positions. I will get this story updated as soon as I can. Thanks again. Fi
Hi Mark – managed to get everything sorted out with the race committee’s help and we are now showing the correct results. Well done on your third place overall and huge apologies for the mistake.
All the best
