BOD 90th Anniversary Gala Dinner Tickets Now On Sale

Dear Fellow BOD Sailors

90th Anniversary Gala BOD Dinner – 22 April 2017 at Wivenhoe House

I am proud and excited to be your Chairman in the year of the 90th anniversary of the design and launch of Brightlingsea One Design C1 Jean in 1927. We owe everything to the legendary vision of sailor and designer Robbie Stone, who understood the special needs of estuary sailing from Brightlingsea and what was required to create a superb racing boat.

14-campus-hotelIn celebration of this auspicious year we are hosting a Gala edition of the BOD Dinner which will be a very special and unique occasion. This year it will be held at the renowned Wivenhoe House Hotel with a menu designed to appeal to all and entertainment themed around our beloved BOD.  It will be an evening of memories, nostalgia of what went before and excitement for the future and what lays ahead.

Planning for this truly memorable evening has been in full swing over the winter and it is now time for you, the most important ingredient, to add your essential participation to the social event of year. With fun and enjoyment at its heart I invite you all to this very special event, one that I believe will be remembered in years to come.

Tickets are strictly limited to 120 and as members of the class you have the opportunity to book tickets for yourselves, crew, friends and family first, before they go on sale to the wider BOD friends group from Saturday 11 February.  I am delighted to say that we already have a large number of provisional bookings and expect the event to sell out rapidly, so please follow the link at the bottom of this message to access the booking form and formally reserve your tickets.

Tables are available for 10 people, although the hotel advise that 11 can be accommodate if you don’t mind squeezing in.  Tickets cost £45 each to include a pre-dinner reception, fabulous three course meal and entertainment. Dress code is jackets and ties for the gentlemen and cocktail dresses for the ladies.

If there is sufficient interest a coach will be organised, picking up from Victoria Place at 18.30 and leaving the hotel again at 23.30.  The exact cost will depend on numbers but will be around £8 to £10 per person return.  Please indicate if you wish to use the coach on the ticket booking form (see link at the bottom of this page).

I look forward to greeting you at Wivenhoe House on Saturday 22 April 2017 from 7pm.

Eight Bells – Sea Dog Treacle

treacleIt is with great sadness that we must report the death of Treacle, one of the newest but best loved characters in the BOD fleet, who was killed in a tragic accident last week.

Treacle was a regular member of C31 Blue Peter’s crew, sailing with owners Claire and Graham Bridle. A typical terrier, she hated to be left out of anything so would regularly be found in the boat park assisting with boat maintenance and making friends with everyone. Afloat she would curl up next to Claire for a nap while the serious business of racing was going on, before popping her head back over the cockpit coaming to see what was going on as soon as the coast was clear.

Treacle will be much missed by us all and we send our condolences and love to Claire and Graham at this difficult time.

Our photo shows Treacle collecting a special prize during Learning & Skills Solutions Pyefleet Week 2016 for being the fastest dog in the regatta.

Janice Actively For Sale – Price Reduced

13407030_10156974957555463_7479067580713457081_nAs he is no longer able to sail her himself Richard Austin is very keen to find a good new home for C44 Janice, which underwent a full restoration with Rob Maloney during winter 1015/6.  He has just dropped her asking price to £15,000 – which is excellent value for money when you bear in mind that he spent in the region of £23,000 on her restoration.

If you are looking to join the BOD Fleet to be part of our 90th Anniversary Celebrations she is most certainly worth considering.

Final Fling 16 – Race Update

As previously noted the 2016 Final Fling will now be raced on the morning of Sunday 30 October from the BSC Line.  David Chivers is our Race Officer and will be running a special start for us after the BSC race which starts at 11.00. High tide is at 11.39 and the forecast is for a lovely light to moderate breeze.

The first BSC Winter Series all in handicap will start at 11am on their normal 5 minutes sequence using the illuminated number board system with their course displayed on the front of the box. We are asked to please ensure we keep well clear of their starting line to avoid any confusion.

In the unlikely event that there is a general recall for the Winter Series race this will have to take priority as their sailing instructions assume they are the only fleet.  Therefore David would recall the Winter Series boats and then restart them before being able to get us underway.

Once the Winter Series boats are on their way down the creek, David will change the course letters and numbers over to a BOD course and he will get the computer system reset for our race which will also use the normal 5 minute sequence with the illuminated number board system.  All being well he should be in a position to start our sequence about 10 minutes after the Winter Series.  Obviously if there is any delay to the BSC Winter Series race, our race will be delayed accordingly too. Please also remember that because he has to restart the system you will need to start your watches on our five and not any of the Winter Series start signals as the two will not be linked as they normally would.

Just to be quite clear, once David has restarted the system it will initially show numeral 0 again which will indicate that he is almost ready and you should be listening and watching for the five. At the five minute gun numeral 0 will disappear and 1 will appear.  At the four minute gun 1 will disappear and 2 will appear.  At the one minute gun 4 will disappear and 5 will appear.  At the start 5 will disappear.

Sorry for this slight change to the usual arrangements but the Winter Series Sailing Instructions only allow for a single handicap fleet and we need to avoid any possible confusion with their race and to keep a small amount of separation.

Final Fling Will Be Raced On Sun 30 Oct

Good news. The Sailing Club and OOD Dave Chivers have kindly offered to run the Final Fling Race for us on Sunday 30th October.
